Dry Eye
A Dry Eye Assessment at Niall O’Kane Optometrists provides a thorough evaluation to identify the causes of dry eye symptoms and their impact on daily life. Dry eye can result in discomfort including dryness, burning, stinging, redness, grittiness, watery eyes, light sensitivity, blurred or fluctuating vision —often affecting reading, screen use, driving as well as overall quality of life.
Our specialist assessment accurately determines the type of dry eye present and identifies any associated conditions contributing to your symptoms. Using advanced diagnostic tools—including slit lamp photography to assess tear quantity and quality and meibometry to measure the function and oil output of the meibomian glands that prevent tear evaporation—we gain a detailed understanding of tear production and stability.
Following your dry eye assessment, our specialist clinicians will prescribe a personalised management plan, combining in-clinic treatments with tailored at-home recommendations to maximise effectiveness and improve long-term comfort and eye health.
BlephEx
A BlephEx treatment at Niall O’Kane Optometrists offers an effective solution for managing anterior blepharitis and enhancing long-term eye comfort.
Performed by our dedicated Ocular Hygienist, the procedure gently removes debris, bacteria, and biofilm from the eyelid margins, reducing symptoms such as itchy or sore eyelids, redness, burning or stinging, crusting around the lashes and fluctuating vision caused by associated dry eye. Regular BlephEx treatments also significantly lower the risk of recurrent eye infections by improving eyelid hygiene and restoring a healthier ocular surface.

Glaucoma
A Glaucoma Assessment at Niall O’Kane Optometrists is a comprehensive, hospital-grade examination conducted by a Specialist Optometrist with advanced qualifications in Glaucoma.
The assessment includes a full evaluation of both the front and back of the eye to accurately detect and monitor glaucoma. Advanced imaging incorporates the Heidelberg Spectralis with the Glaucoma Premium Module - offering ultra-high-resolution OCT imaging with dedicated glaucoma software to analyse the retinal nerve fibre layer, ganglion cell layer, and optic nerve head. The module includes reference databases, trend and event progression analysis, and eye-tracking technology for highly accurate, repeatable measurements over time.
Humphrey Visual Fields testing evaluates peripheral vision, Goldmann tonometry measures intraocular pressure precisely, and Pachymetry using an ultrasound device provides accurate corneal thickness readings—essential for interpreting eye pressure and assessing glaucoma risk. This specialist examination is ideal for glaucoma suspects, those with a family history, a history of ocular trauma or anyone seeking a detailed, expert assessment for peace of mind.
Colorimetry
A Colorimetry assessment at Niall O’Kane Optometrists addresses the symptoms experienced by patients experiencing visual stress. Using the intuitive Cerium Colorimeter, this 30-minute appointment identifies the most effective therapeutic lens tint for each individual. Unlike coloured overlay sheets, the Cerium Colorimeter provides a personalised solution that can be incorporated directly into spectacle lenses for everyday use.
Precisely prescribed colour tints help reduce symptoms such as headaches, eye strain, light sensitivity, blurred or moving text, and reading or concentration difficulties making visual tasks more comfortable and sustainable. For all Colorimetry assessments, an up to date eye examination is required prior to exclude any other causes of symptoms similar to visual stress.

Myopia Management
Myopia management aims to slow the progression of nearsightedness in children, protecting long-term eye health by reducing the risk factors associated with high spectacle prescriptions. While these treatments cannot reverse myopia, they significantly reduce the risk of serious eye conditions such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, and myopic macular degeneration. Myopia management works by slowing the elongation of the eye, with some interventions reducing progression by around 50–60%.
Management Options:
- Specialized Spectacles Lenses (Miyosmart)
- Orthokeratology (Ortho-K): Worn overnight to reshape the cornea for clear daytime vision
- Soft Daily Contact Lenses: Correct distance vision while gently blurring peripheral vision to slow progression
